Oppositions in astrology

Because of the either-or neither-nor nature of the opposition, it’s hard to solve it. You can’t integrate the two opposed elements into one distinctive and dominant energy. You can’t dismiss one of them completely. Theres not much you can do, besides being very much aware of the power of the opposition itself. It is very much an illusion, and should be treated as illusions, delusion or deceit: with lots of suspicious respect. “I don’t believe it, though I know the impact it has upon me” – that’s what you should tell yourself when dealing with opposition influence if you find this influence hard and complicating. But many times an opposition integrates well in the personality and is not experienced as a problem at all.

Opposition, so they say, is one of the hardest aspects found in natal charts.

Oppositions may appear in Synastry also but their meaning is different.

In a Natal Chart, Opposition is possible as long as planets occupy the houses on both sides of the chart: east-west or north-south. The reason, of course, is that two planets need to have a 180° angle between them in order to form the opposition aspect.

(by the way, in case you were wondering: the angles – 180° (opposition), 60° (trine), 90° (square), 120° (sextile) atc – are measured from the center of the chart, i.e. planet earth. Meaning a square (90°), for example, between Chiron and sun, for example, is formed when both chiron and the sun forms a 90° angle accordance the center of the chart)

What I have found is that the opposition itself, such as many other aspects in astrology, is not necessarily hard. It depends very much on balancing agents, or other aspects and planets on the chart.

First, charts which are loaded with oppositions tend to be harder for the person then one single opposition. It’s almost like the person has developed a special sensitivity to conflicts and dichotomy and have become throughout life very touchy to every situation or feeling involves one of these characteristics: conflict and/or dichotomy. That’s because of the nature of the opposition aspect/s: it makes an either-or neither-nor attitude and finally, an either-or neither-nor reality and mental environment.

Usually, charts with no oppositions at all are more likely to have conjunctions, which are aspects that are experienced as much more natural and less conflictual then the opposition (and the square), even though they might cause troubles as much.

Opposition considers an external angle, meaning it’s energy is being direct outwards. It is the most outwards-oriented angle; therefore it’s hard influence, if there is any, is not being accumulated within the person but rather manifests itself in the open – either in actions, reactions or external dialogue. Finally, It says to sooth and ease the personality and moderate the energy of both planets involved.

The problem, as I wrote previously, is when one has lots of oppositions. It’s sort of like there is no “neutral” consciousness to say “I don’t believe it” or “I do/dont want it” – all of it is blurred and fogged by the many oppositions influence.
